Amazon ECR now supports replication backfill for existing container images

Amazon ECR now supports replication backfill, which replicates existing images in a private registry to configured replication destinations. Previously, replication only applied to images pushed after replication was enabled, so teams had to retag images manually. Backfill jobs can be started with a single API call, up to ten can run concurrently, and per-image progress is visible through new APIs.

What changes for platform teams

Platform teams can seed new or existing Regions and disaster recovery destinations with an full image catalog without retagging images. Jobs can be stopped at any time without deleting already replicated images, and the feature is available in all Regions where ECR is offered.
