Amazon CloudWatch now supports API keys for OpenTelemetry traces
Amazon CloudWatch now accepts API keys used as bearer tokens for sending OpenTelemetry traces to the AWS X-Ray OTLP traces endpoint. Any OTLP/HTTP client that can set an Authorization header, including the OpenTelemetry Collector and SDK exporters, can authenticate this way instead of using SigV4. AWS says SigV4 remains the recommended method, and the feature is available in all commercial regions where the X-Ray OTLP traces endpoint runs.
What changes for platform teams
Platform teams can send traces from workloads that cannot use the AWS SDK or short-term credentials, such as on-premises, other-cloud, and CI/CD jobs, using a static Authorization header. Traces sent this way get the same CloudWatch capabilities as SigV4 traces, so the change is mainly about credential handling.
